I have had this with my Mk3 midget. It takes time and lot of patience to
get it right. The catch in the centre of the hole needs to be adjusted. It also
needs to be well greased. If you take off the front grille, it's easier to
do it, as when it's closed you can reach up inside. Make sure the movable parts
are clear of any grit, and then grease them well. Try re-positioning the
sliding catch a few times. You will eventually get it right. But you must make
sure the nuts are tightened up well, otherwise they will work lose again.
Good luck with the job, it's not quite so bad as it sounds. You might get it
right first time!
