To get as much as possible. Sometimes sellers might put too high a reserve
on an item, so rather than not make a sale, they contact one of the bidders to
see if they are still interested, especially if their bid was close to the
reserve. Happened to a friend of ours recently. His car did not make the
reserve, so he contacted the highest bidder and sold it!
