Thanks for all the feedback guys.
Gerard, what you are saying about the first motion shaft continuing to spin makes sense as when the clutch is disengaged it sounds like there is still a lot of spinning of the gears in the transmission when I try to shift into first while at a dead stop. The car is still on a non-op registration so have not had a chance to take it out for any higher speed runs to see if things loosen up.
