You've successfully made every argument on the situation. Pick
your poison...'-) The OD unit is probably the easiest and most
practical.
Your other option is to install a 1275 with a Datsun 5 speed.
That's the best choice in my opinion. Easily done too. You could
opt for all Datsun drive train too.
