Whilst it may not be the trouble in this case, it is possible for broken bits of bearing cage or other unrequired detritus to find its way into the holes in the casing that allow the change rods to move back and forwards. If this happens, the gearbox may be stuck in gear or not go into gear at all. had the problem on one of my cars. Not fun, but it is quite 'do able'
