maybe a PO put in some snake oil to 'quieten it down' at some stage? If the
volatile stuff evaporates over time your red clay might be what's left.
There *is* actually a clay-like mineral called bentonite which is used in
some types of grease; dunno what goes into gearbox-quietener-down gunk
though.
