No, thats not what I'm saying, but I can see why you might interpret in that
way.
What I meant was when you consider the amount of time thats already gone
into this project (mostly on rebuilding the bodywork and preparation for
paint) if I'd used a Heritage Shell (the body rebuilding stage would not apply,
and the preparation for paint would be minimal) the stage I'm at now (which
is about 3/4 the way to finishing in terms of the total amount of work) would
be equal to about 1/4 of the way to finishing (in terms of the total amount of
work) if I'd used a Heritage Shell.
Does that make it clearer? Probably not actually!
What I'm really trying to say is, there's a hell of a lot less work in rebuilding
from the ground up using a Heritage shell than there is in rebuilding using the
original shell.
Incidentally, I'm not knocking Heritage Shells, I think the'yre marvellous when
you consider what you get for your money - they're very cheap. Anyone
considering a full body rebuild on a rubber bumpered Midget, would do well
to consider one. It won't work out cheaper (if you do the work yourself) but
you'll save an enormous amout of time using one and have a new shell at the
end of it.
Using a Heritage shell was never an option for me, partly because I wanted to
retain as much of the original car as possible, and partly because I wasn't
willing to sink that amount of money into the car. Having said that, in
retrospect and having the benefit of hindsight, if they had made a totally
original Heritage Bodyshell for my year of car I'd have used one, and cut out
an enormous amount of work.
I can't reiterate enough how much work is involved in a full body rebuild,
those that have done it will obviously know, but for those contemplating it,
theres about 50 times more work than you think !
I can recall fondly it took me about a week just to get one of the sill outer
covers fitting correctly!
