As of this morning, they both are in custody but there is some question if they are really the cause. The story is that they were hunting and got separated. One started a small fire to signal the other one. There was a huge wind change and it got out of control. It really was a small fire and only was about 20 to 50 acres for over 12 or 15 hours. Then we got hit with a "Santa Anna" wind, which is an east wind off the desert which is very dry and hot and strong, 40 to 60 knots, and it just took off. In the next 12 hours it did 20,000 acres.
The biggest problem was with our fire equipment and manpower, much of which was sent to the LA area for a big fire there, leaving San Diego very under manned. That also means that we had no air tankers or choppers to knock it down in the remote areas.
