You're right of course, It's very difficult to give people advice on this list
without seeing the problem first hand, all you can really do is 'steer them in
the right direction' (pun NOT intended *g*)
Let's face it, unless the front suspension has been meticulously maintained,
which few are, or had a recent front suspension rebuild (like mine was) they
could all do with a strip, inspection and thoroughly regreasing.
I'm not sure I'd describe the front suspension as being 'crude' more simplistic
really. Let's face it these cars were designed in the late 50's and to a budget.
When you consider what the designers were up against, I think they did a
pretty good job really. The front suspension is simple and effective and if, if if
if if if if if if . . . it's regularly maintained will give trouble free service for many
10's of thousands of miles.
The problems come in when it's not maintained, it is far from maintenance
free, and if thats the case expect a relatively expensive rebuild!
