Nigel is trying to save you a headache
a couple of years down the road.
What use is it to pay a 2,500 pounds for
a year or two of use, only to have to take the off the road because you
cannot affor
needed repairs, most especially for those
required in the interests of safety?
This does not mean you should stop
looking (and most of all, learning) as you
continue to save your hard earned pounds.
For there is always the possibility
that you will get lucky. I have been there
twice. Part of the reason I was lucky is
because I knew what to look for and had
the cars checked out mechanically and
while there, put the car up on a lift to get
a good look at the underbody, including
picking around with a screwdriver in one
hand and a can of underseal in the other
(the intent was to inspect, and for this you
may have to remove some underseal to
do do...so one should be a position to
"replace" same). But I and my mechanic
both knew what we were looking for and
what would have to be spent (if anything)
to make the car safe and reliable.
These costs were either taken into account by the seller (to one extent
or
another) in terms of his asking price, or
we passed on the car and kept looking.
My point is to help you get lucky, you must have someone who knows these
cars and can "be there" personally when
you think you may have found something
worthwhile to the extent you set it up
with a mechanic who is knowledgeable
and can check the machine out mechanically, etc. so you know what you
are getting into to assure safe, reliable
transportation. Of course, the more you
personally know the better off you are.
Without the foregoing knowledge and assistance being on hand, you
are gambling on pure luck. In this instance
you would be better off spending more up
front for a better example...no doubt about
it.
As you know, there is no free lunch. You
are either going to work for it or pay for
it. It's more or less strictly a case of
"pay me now, or pay me later".
Now I will close my mouth and respect
your freedom of choice as another adult
to "name your own poison"! I am a great
believer in equality.
