Chris,
Yes our Rugby team took on the world and beat them all (USA went out quite
early in the competition didn't they????? )- flame suit on . At least it was
a real world championship not just limited to one country plus the
occassional neighbour, now what sport is that , oh yes! Rounders - double
thickness flame suit and running shoes on now. 8o)
My wife wore my England shirt ( Will Carlings from the 96? - 5 nations cup)
to work on Monday . She works in telecommunications and they have large TV
screens on the wall with about 5 different programmes running all day. The
office was a sea of white except for one springbok shirt and the one and
only Aussie shirt. Typical Ausssie , he was giving the England fans loads of
grief my ( wife and daughter in particular ) during the contest, but took it
like a man after they were beaten in the final. Even though his desk was
decorated (by a couple of females !!) with a St George flag , a squashed
inflatable kangaroo , several aussie jokes and cartoons blown up to A3, some
humble pie etc etc
We watched all of the England matches plus the all 1/4 and semi finals and
to be honest I didn't think we quite had that sparkle in all the previous
matches, always just enough to win , but not consistantly better than than
the opposition.
But the final match - absolutely mind blowing. A Hollywood script writer
couldn't have written better. The Aussies drawing level with Flatleys
conversion in the 79th minute , then in extra time our Jonny getting the
vital 3points with the last kick of the match. Absolutely brilliant. 17 - 20
Despite all the Pommie bashing before the final , the Aussies have taken it
very well. One of our team went up to a particularly vocal Australian
reporter after the match ready to have a go and the Aussie simply said "Well
played , best team won " The England player had been looking forward to
having a really good p*ss take and , well nothing, - all he could say was
"thankyou"
The the team and all of the fans were exemplary , real ambassadors , No
trouble whatsoever, A pity the soccer team and fans don't behave like that.
I was on a St John training course and the firm next door were decorating a
stretched limo (White Lincoln Continental ) It had the England Rose
graphics, the St George flag , Welcome home World cup winners etc on it. It
was to take our local player Neil Back (played for Coventry and now
Leicester Tigers with Martin Johnson (strange he's England captain but not
the tigers, they had 5 players in the final England squad)
I watched the recorded Victory parade at 11pm through to 01-30 this morning.
I got quite emotional !!
