No, no, Nigel...you misunderstand.
No one said England had the BEST
system in the world and no one expects
services to be free (except illegal aliens
but this is government's doing, not ours.
Keeps labor costs down I guess, generally
speaking!).
Absolutely nothing is free...but I think
your system gives the average family
more bang for the buck among "free"
nations. And from what Colin (I think)
has stated in terms of Austraila,
my impression it that this is even more
the case "down there".
We have our Social Security system
over here, which we all contribute to all
our working lives as well. It's going broke
and if Bush's "illegal amnesty" plan is
passed, methinks it will go broke even
faster. No way it has really kept up with
inflation. But it's better than nothing.
Our system is also crumbling, You are
not alone in this for sure. OTOH, at least
both our countries have some sort of
system. I sort of like Sweden's system
wherein basically you pay the government
to take care of you to a remarkable extent,
relatively speaking. But, I'm sure it's not
perfect either although for what you pay,
maybe it should be! :):):)
Uncontrolled and/or illegal immigration is
a huge problem in the US as well, Nigel.
You are not alone in this, either.
We have a government agency (INS)
that doesn't obey it's own laws and courts
who allow it. I have nothing against legal
immigration but certainly it should be
controlled for the good of those already
here in terms of the economy. I mean,
one of the main reasons our State of
California has gone bust is the free
state government handouts and entitlements which continue to ILLEGAL
immigrants in a depressed economy. I mean how stupid is this? And we
continue as though times are good! I mean their
lawbreakers...ILLEGALS...and we pay them!!
I mean when things are great and there
is enough to go around after those that
are already here have been taken care
of, then I'm all for helping others less
fortunate. But making the fortunate far
less fortunate, by helping ILLEGAL
unfortunates doesn't make much sense
to me considering present economy and
unemployment rate.
I mean Germany is responding to the
same economic circumstances by deporting them...sending them back home
because their present enconomy cannot
afford to support them without forcing bad
times upon the majority and/or all concerned.
Our government's (IMHO) not lookin'
out for us to the extent it used to either.
You guys have got plenty of company,
believe me. Any further discussion on
this we should go off list, eh? :):)
