Dear Listers,
Just something interesting I have become aware of lately, I wonder if it is a Southern California fad or have you all seen it?
It is a sport called Drifting. The object is to take a car around a closed course at high speed (sometimes as much as 100 mph) and throw it into a huge 4 wheel drift for as far as possible. Speed or crossing the finish line first is not the object, it is scored on style points like figure skating. Some times the drift can last 600 feet or so. Big clouds of smoke, screeching tyres, big spectator crowds, low cost of cars, all add to the popularity. It is huge in Japan and now is getting big here in California. Mostly Japanese cars (rear wheel drive) and many Japanese kids participate but it is growing. A big meet coming up where top drivers are being flown in from Japan to give exhibitions. I saw a 1/2 hour TV show about it and there is a long story in the San Diego Union paper about it today.
Just thought I would pass it along and see if people in other parts of the country or the world have been hearing about it.
Cheers,
Bob in San Diego
