I know that this really is off LBC topics but it is very interesting to me to get a snapshot of real living conditions from various parts of the world.
Nigel's information of the tax of about 8% going health care is interesting. In my case, (and I am happy with my HMO health care plan with Kaiser) (except for the cost) It now costs me $800 USD per month!!!!! for me and my wife and no children. That is with no major health problems. It would have been more but I changed my plan to increase my co-pay to $30 USD per visit and $10 USD per drug perscription, in order to get a lower monthly payment.
By Nigel's 8% figure, I would have to make $110,000 USD per year to pay for my medical. Since I make significantly less than that number, I think I am paying significantly more for health than in the UK. One of the differences is that the cost does not go up or down in relation to what I earn. Another difference is that the care is quite good and the third difference is that a huge percentage of the people do not have coverage and they are just "shit-out-of-luck", if they get sick or hurt.
Just my "two-pills-worth".
