Indeed thrifty. Can't stand to see anything thrown away that can be reasonably repaired. In mechanics and restoration there seems to be two schools of thought, those who throw away whole units rather than repair them and those who replace only the worn out parts. Observant that you are you certainly know which category I fit into . . . and most Cubans . . . out of necessity.
My washing machine has a large computer board in it, should a wax activated door lock unit fail it burns out a 10 cent resistor on the computer control board, poor engineering. ... Maytag's solution is to send a repair man out and replace the complete 200 plus dollar computer board and toss it in the trash. Heaven forbid a repairman would use a soldering iron and replace a ten cent resistor. It's a bit like replacing the complete wiring harness in a Spridget because a fuse blows. ;-)
