If you are going to make your own, try to get hold of 'oil bonded' hardboard. It is very dense and waterproof. ordinary hardboard is what I would call a 'biscuit' brown. Oil bonded is very much darker brown, almost black. It is a much higher quality product and will not distort like the cheaper ones.
