Yes, "easy outs" are screw extractors.
Yes, if you break one it is ugly. I never have. Why would you put
too much muscle on it and break it? You do need to be careful with
the smaller ones, but it is like any other tool. Use common sense.
A couple times I have nicked some threads using them, but was able to
chase the threads without a problem.
My guess is that there may be some "junk" screw extractors out
there. I paid the long dollar for my set. Have had them for 15
years. Never broken one.
