There is clearly a differnce between what the employee mechanic gets in his
wage packet and what the employing garage charges for his time.
Typicaly a gargae in the UK will charge between 30 and 90 GBP per hour as a
labour rate. The range will relate to what type of garage it is, where it
is located, and what make of car it deals with. Some specialists expensiv
e machinery will be well over the upper figure here.
The mechanics in those same garages will get far less, typically from 8 to
20 GBP per hour. I think any UK mechanic would be pretty pleased to land h
imself a job where he was paid a flat rate above the upper figure. Overtim
e and the occasional "foreigner" may boost his weekly earnings, but not his
hourly rate.
A self-employed mechanic will likely charge 30 GBP or so, but that isn't hi
s wage. It is his wage plus his overheads.
