Couldn't agree more. Concours isn't worth the effort. Like you, I bought my car to drive. I've loved LBC's since I was a kid. I actually bought and drove a '69 Triumph GT6+ when I was 19 and have been hooked ever since. Had to sell it after 9 months for the college fund but I sure wish I had it today.
Unlike you however, I always planned a non-original car. In my opinion, driveability is somewhat compromised by MG technology which is a polite way of dissing Lucas. My best improvement to the car was dumping the Lucas alternator for a 62 amp GM pickup truck unit and replacing the bullet connectors with disconnects under the bonnet and boot. I also confess to being something of a speed freak so engine/suspension mods are a priority. I don't believe such things compromise the experience as many of my "improvements" are similiar to what was done to the cars when new. Additionally, fate threw a 1975 rubber bumper model my way. Certainly far from best of the breed and in my opinion a bastardized version of a fine little car. I have a great deal of respect for your approach as well. If for no other reason it's more difficult.
The long and short of it is we buy and restore these cars in the way which satisfies and makes us happy. Vive le difference.
