Which is precisely the reason I'm painting my car myself.
I think you've knocked the nail on the head, you CAN GET superb results using
professional sprayers, but at a cost, and that cost is significant as you have
pointed out. Long gone are the days you could get a decent respray for under
1k USD. This is partly because many of the 'pro's' will not guarantee a respray
unless they do the prep and primer work, and of course as we all know, that
part of the respray takes a considerable amount of time.
The pro's over here want anything from 1,500 GBP (2,250USD) upwards for a
respray, and more if it's a 'bare-metal' respray and/or two-pack.
I firmly beleive that if you're willing to put in the time and are meticulous
about the results you want, you can get as good as, or better re-spray results
by spraying at home as you can from 'professionals' but only if you're using
cellulose.
You can spray using aerosol can's and still get superb results, but only if
you're willing to put the work in!
My paint costs alone are going to come to around 400GBP (600USD) thats etch
primer, cellulose primer filler, cellulose primer, cellulose compatible stone
guard, cellulose thinners, cellulose gloss in blue, black and satin black,
Hammerite Primer, Black Gloss and Silver. Factor in the labour time for prep
work, spraying, flatting back etc and you can easily see how resprays cost
upwards of 2kUSD.
The one benefit a home resprayer has over a professional is time. You can
make up for lack of experience in spraying by putting in more work in flatting
and cutting back.
Bob, have a go yourself, you might amaze yourself at the results you can
achieve!
