The "guide coat" thing I think about like this...
The surface to be sprayed should be flat, concave, or convex, but should not have dimples, hollows or high spots.
Spraying a very thin dusting coat of a contrasting colour at first just changes the colour of the panel, but as you then flatten off with paper around a flat block it has the effect of removing the guide colour from all the peaks and high spots. The valleys and low spots remain untouched by the flat block show they show up with the contrasting colour. You actually get an effect a bit like a contour map.
One has to resist the temptation to try and remove the guide coat from the low spots by concentrate flattening off the coloured areas - quite the reverse, its the high spots where the guide coat comes off first which need to be further reduced. Severe depressions remaining are then filled in by more filler coat (spray putty) and the guide coat process repeated. Eventually one will get to the stage where the fine guide coat all comes off evenly across a complete panel, showing that the peaks and troughs have all gone.
Nigel, I know you are familliar with this - you have the elongated arms to proove it, but thought the explanation might help others.
