Hi listers.
First the question: I see that there are seperate part numbers for
the front and rear sump/pan seals (those cork strips). I just got a
Payen lower engine gasket kit and both strips looked the same to me.
It didn't occur to me that they were supposed to be different so I
didn't inspect too close and put them in randomly. Both protruded at
least a 1/4" (probably more) at both ends when put in their sump
grooves. Should the excess be cut off? If so how much? Or are they
just supposed to compress?
Now the warning: I'll be doing the sump fitting over again since I
ran into a problem caused by a MISTAKE IN THE HAYNES MANUAL! The
torque listed for the sump bolts was 20 Ft/lbs. This seemed too high
to me and I thought I recalled someone on the list saying it was
between 5 and 10 ft/lbs. However it was getting cold and late and the
Gasket sealent was setting up so I just followed the manual...and
broke off a bolt in the block! I then checked the Bently manual and
it says 6 ft/lbs which seems much more reasonable. Now I have a
helicoil in that hole and ordered new gaskets, and the rear seal is
back ordered at Moss, Oh, Bother!
I'm on digest mode so I may be slow to react to any replys.
Thanks,
Curt
