Some while ago I used the production figure / date tables in Clausager's book to check against my car's first registration date. Making the assumption that daily production rate was fairly consistent gave me a production date for my car at about 3 weeks before registration - which seemed to me to be about right. So maybe it isn't that bad an assumption to make.
I have never applied for a BMIHT certificate, but I did send of my fiver to DVLA for a copy of all their records for the car. These included photocopies of the V5 (and the preceeding log book) plus some computer data print-outs. My car, like yours, had 11 previous owners, and I have the names and addresses of each at the time. It also provides an interesting tale about colour changes. It started out factory green but was re-sprayed black when only 3 years old. (why?) It was later registered as red, all according to the log-book records. When I stripped it I found that it had in fact been two qute different shades of red, but had also been yellow and purple. It is now Teal Blue, so that makes 12 owners and 7 colours!! What a life!!
