Have you seen the price of those steel radio consoles? I can't
recall exactly how much Moss were asking - but it was in the
region of 60 odd quid! They do, do a cheaper fibreglass one, but
in my opinon they're a bit naff. These are the later type consoles
by the way that were standard fitment to 1500 Midgets. The
'optional' console for the earlier Midgets (like yours) are slightly
different and not easy to find, I have seen them second hand, but
they are pricey.
I got mine (the later 1500 type) off ebay, from a guy in the US. I
paid I think about 5 bucks for it but 22 bucks for shipping lol! It
still worked out cheaper than buying one over here - about 15
quid. It is a steel one in primer, but as it will be covered in vinyl
trim it'll look 'as new'.
So my advice for a console is to keep an eye open on ebay, you'll
pay more in the UK than if you get it from the US like I did; or
watch for people 'breaking' 1500 Midgets as they all came with
one as standard. I saw someone very close to me recently
breaking two 1500 Midgets.
I have a fairly recent Sony Radio Cassette player about 5 years
old and it fits in the slot just fine. I really wouldn't worry too much
about the CD/Radio fitting the slot, all recent players are a pretty
standard size.
That 1500 console will do me for the moment until I find a
reasonable priced 'original' console...
