The seals stop oil draining down the stem of the valve, deflecting it from
the edge of the guide. Fairly primitive as they don't actually create a
seal as such because they are pushed up the valve stem a bit (by the amount
of valve lift) So if the head is awash, the oil floods onto the exposed
valve stem below the seals and they no longer work.
