Capt'n Bob, You of all people let them go down the wrong path?
The windshield does not "Push" the air any more than a fence pushes
the wind. The air flows around or over the windscreen depending on
the angle of the windscreen just like the water from rain hitting the
windshield while you are driving. A slanted windscreen forces the
air up into the air above it creating a higher pressure above and
less pressure behind the windshield, like the leading edge of an
airplane wing. With a top on, the air flows smoothly across the top,
lifting the fabric of the top in the vacuum, and where the top drops
off, like the rear window, or back of the car, the air comes back
together. If where the air comes back together is smooth, like the
trailing edge of a wing, there is a smooth transision of the air
comming back together. If the object, wing or windshield is going to
fast for the air to come back together smoothly, a vacuum is created,
lifting the wing, and turblance is created by the air trying to fill
the vacuum after having passed the point of the vacuum thereby giving
you the back draft in the back of your neck, and why the back window,
rear end of the car or truck, gets dirty. At 3 MPH, you don't notice
it because the air is going over the windshield and sucking back
behind the windsheld before hitting you. At 40 MPH, you feel it
hitting you in the back of the neck. At 200 MPH, you are probably
going too fast for the air to hit you in the neck but the turblance
is behind you.
