On our old Singer Vogue, we could take the key out of the ignition with the
engine still running. In fact, once the whole barrel came out and fell on the
floor! With lots of old cars, particularily those still using the original
key, the keys become very worn. They work, but there is no way that a
duplicate could work! The lock & key wear out together.
