Let's see...it's been a week or so since Drew picked up Rick's '73
Midget in Vegas and drove it to the Seattle area. He took four days
and his girl friend...she must have a great deal of faith in him to
attempt such an adventure. I did get a couple of cell phone calls
from him asking about this and that...you know, things like, "Why
did it just stop running out here in the middle of nowhere?"...the
usual questions. The first time turned out to be bad points...so
bad he couldn't get any kind of gap. He ended up bending the end
some to enough gap to run. I assured him that points can be obtain
from several parts houses if he ever found a town (there were
driving the back roads in CA and OR). They made it to a town and
did find points and condenser. He called me after installing them
ans said it was running so much better than when they had left
Vegas. Just a few hours later...another call...it had died again
and this time it wasn't the points. It was no longer going tick,
tick, tick, tick when the key was turned on...you guessed it, fuel
pump. One small issue, he didn't know where it was. So I told
him...I told him he needed to jack up the car to get to it - he said
the jack was buried under all the crap in the trunk - I laughed - he
didn't appreciate my laughter. We concluded that the fuse needed to
be checked, then the wiring (my experience was an "on the road"
replacement of a pump that turned out to be the result of a broken
wire under the insulation - not uncommon with older cars). I didn't
hear from him again but he made it to work the next day where he
told me he just reached under the car and "jiggled" the wires - the
pump begain working and they made it home.
I got a ride in it yesterday. It's not a bad $750 car! It's March,
it's Seattle, and we had the top down!!! I need to get mine back on
the road ASAP.
