Thanks, Colin.
All the experts seem to agree on knurling. I've had it apart enough
times that it's no big deal to take it apart again. There's an
ancient but good auto machine shop which I'm certain will have a
collection of knurling tools. In fact it's so old that when a
friend took a generator in for rebuild, the machinist there took one
look at it and asked, "Where did you get a '39 LaSalle?"
On the other hand, my daughter thinks I need all the latest
gadgetry, so presented me with an iPod for my birthday last week. I
may take your first suggestion and just crank up the 'Stones a bit
louder.
