The rubber bumpers were required to pass US legislation that required a car
suffer no damage in a 5 or 15 MPH impact IIRC, However the ride height was
raised because at about the same tine US legislation required the headligh
ts to be above a certain height, this being the second time the spridgets h
eadlights fell foul of US law makers!
As for the wings the front arch is different on a 1500 wing to the earlier
car. The 1275 wings I have are original BMC items (not pattern or Heritage)
I also have a pair of pattern 1500 and the original BL wings from the car,
You would never notice the difference in the arches looking at them, only
on the car, the 1500 wing has the to of he arch lower down on the wing, I o
nly noticed it when I put the 1275 wings on the car and saw the huge gap be
tween wheel and arch, initial thoughts were that the reduced weight (remova
l of bumpers bonnet but not engine) had caused the suspension to rise, but
putting the rotten originals back on caused this gap to disappear. The only
reason I can see for this is BL noticed withe the old wings and the new sp
rings the car looked odd and altered the wings.
