Got everything hooked up, but since it is below zero ouside with 8"
of snow, I decided to give the car a bit of a test inside the shop.
Am able to shift into each gear, but considerable force is needed.
There is a very distinct "crunch" shifting into first and reverse,
less so in reverse. The take-off in each gear is smooth, but when
the car is in gear with the clutch depressed, there is a substantial
amount of noise coming from the tranny area.
The clutch begins to engage right as the pedal is being released.
The master and slave are new/rebuilt. System was carefully bled by
pedal pump and by pressure. The shift lever has no "slop" in it,
such that the full slave travel results in clutch release travel.
The slave pin travel is between 3/8 and 1/2 inch. The transmission
was alledgedly "rebuilt" but I really have no information on it.
I really have a couple questions. First, how much noise is "normal"
(tranny in gear, clutch depressed)? Second, how hard should it be to
shift into the different gears? Should it crunch going into first
and reverse? I know driving the car 20 feet back and forth in the
shop is not much of a test. Is it simply a matter of the components
being new and needing "broken" in? Will it be easier to shift into
the higher gears when the car as rolling, as opposed to a dead stop?
Am I doing something wrong (other than failing to do a 5 speed)?
I guess that's more than a couple questions. As usual, thanks for
the kind help.
