So much depends on a properly operating electrical system, particularly in
older spridgets. To be fair to the Lucas the Prince of Darkness any 30 - 40
year old electrical system, even the best for the period spridgets were
made, fails with age and usually for the same reasons . . . oxidation of
contacts and a mixture of oil and dirt.
A basic knowledge of electronics is a powerful tool in trouble shooting.
Having a background in electronics it is painful for me to watch anyone
jabbing in the dark when trying to fix electrical problems when a simple
basic knowledge of electronics would give them the necessary knowledge as a
tool to logically and easily trouble shoot the problem. Every so often I run
across a web site where a person has gone to the trouble to share their
knowledge in a way that almost anyone can gain some basic understanding of
electronics. All the electrical system in spridgets are very basic
electrical systems, no space age electronics in these big boy toys.
I recommend checking out this site if you feel lost when dealing with
electrical problems either in the home or under the hood. While it is geared
to auto sound systems the basic electronic theory section will give anyone a
better understanding of electrical systems.

To save cost Spridgets were very under fused, most early ones having only
two for the whole electrical system, making trouble shooting far more
complex than if the system had been divided up into smaller fuse blocks. If
you sit down and take the time to learn the wiring system, most spridget
manuals have wiring diagrams in them, you will save yourself a lot of
frustration. I suspect about half of what folks think is a mechanical or
fuel problem is often a single faulty wiring connection. Well, vacuum leaks
are high on the list too.
