I posted the original question and I seem to have confused a few of the guys
who were kind enough to take the time to try to help me out. The floor is
rotted away from the outside in, I will be replacing both inner and outer
sills however the left and right hand floor panels would not (even if welded
together) create a new one piece floor, they are not wide enough. The panels
are designed to be welded to the centre section of the floor which is under
the centre tunnel and never goes rusty. In my case the good section of the
floor in the centre of the car is about two feet wide and so I plan to cut
it back to just inside the stiffeners (one side at a time) and weld the new
panel to it, I will then replace the sills and spot weld the inner sill to
the outer edge of the new floor section. I am interested in the best way to
join the inner edge of the floor to the remnants of the original floor near
the tunnel. I have experimented with some scrap metal and would have to
agree with you that the joggled overlap was easier and quicker to do than
the butt weld and gave me less distortion, however I too am concerned about
the rust trap gap between.
