That's usually a pretty easy fix. You can try two things, one at a time. Drain out the oil. Then use a tooth brush and solvent to clean out the threads in the housing. Frequently there are little bits of "stuff" there! Clean the drain plug so it has no trash bits in the threads and wrap it with teflon tape, like the plumbers use, and put the plug back in. Does the trick about 90% of the time.
For the remaining 5 or 10%, do the hole cleaning bit AFTER you have run a 1/2" pipe tap in the drain hole. Put grease on the tap to catch any stuff it dislodges. Wrap the plug threads in teflon tape and screw it it. If that doesn't do it a brass plug works well as it's softer and conforms well to the internal threads.
In any of these fixes, make the plug magnetic by epoxy on the plug and drop a small round ceramic magnet in the epoxy puddle.
Oh! Yes! put the magnet on the plug so it runs in the gear oil! Don't need it hanging outside!!
You also may have a leak between the dif. housing and the dif. unit. Don't count that out.
Remember to put oil back in the dif.!!!! They don't last well with no oil!
