Nigel, Some while ago I used the production figure / date tables in Clausager's book to check against my car's first registration date. Making the assumption that daily production rate was fairly consistent gave me a production date for my car at about 3 weeks before registration - which seemed to me to be about right. So maybe it isn't that bad an assumption to make. I have never applied for a BMIHT certificate, but I did send of my fiver to DVLA for a copy of all their records for the car. Nigel, you may know this one..... There is apparently a book by a Doctor, about rebuilding a Midget. It is apparently more a narrative about the process, including a bit of "Zen & the art of rebuiding old cars" about it, rather than the normal DIY repair guide. Hi everyone. I recently have come across some NOS parts that were from a British inventory buyout. I am trying to identify some, so any of you catalog guys out there may be able to locate and tell me what it fits. BRC6156 It looks like a spare tire cover, I thought it was Triumph? I make it pre- Oct 1961 when the boot handle changed from L to T. But as David says the steering wheel changed to black at Nov 61, so I'd put it somewhere around Oct-Nov 61. I'd be interested to know how it got a 66-67 Reg plate though! Nigel "amukdigiphoto" 28150... MORE
Hey Everybody I need some help. The guy I bought my Midget from has two AH Sprites and he doesn't know what year they are so Im trying to find out for him. Iv already taken the identification numbers and tried decoding them using the guide on this web site. http://www.mgcars.org.uk/midgetspriteclub/sprite/spriteident.htm I know there Mark IVs but I cant narrow down the year they were made. You can keep a registration no on retention for a year, at a cost of =A325 on top of the =A380 transfer fee. After that time, you can hold it for a furth er 12 months, for another fee of =A325. Robert As David pointed out, Heritage Shells are treated differently. I think they treat them as a 'repair panel' rather than 'another car', because they have never been registered as a 'car', and as you're transferring more than 70% of the donor car into the Heritage Shell, it still takes on the registration of the donor car. There are guidelines on what constitutes that 70% and I think it includes engine, gearbox, diff etc. amukdigiphoto@... 27648... MORE
Tim I have no direct experience of this, but in my mind, and from what I 'understand' you will definitely devalue your car by selling it's original registration number, no doubt about it. By how much, who knows, but it loses part of its history, and that makes it less desirable. It's a bit like cars that don't have their original engines and have had replacements put in. It doesn't detract some people, but it does make it difficult to get a top notch price if you ever come to sell it, because its not 'original' throughout. Whilst I... MORE
I have a '61 Sprite with what is probably a desirable UK personal registration number (three letters, three numbers. I am contemplating selling the registration number to fund some needed bodywork restoration works on the car and I was wondering whether anyone else in the group has any experience of this. The number plate means nothing to me but I wouldn't want to lose the style of number plate (silver font on black background) or the letter/number configuration. My understanding is that the DVLC would give a similar style "non-transferable" registration number. I don't want to reduce the value... MORE
In the UK, if you re-shell a car with anything other than a Heritage shell (which is classed as a replacement/spare part), strictly speaking, the car should be registered on a Q plate as being of indeterminate age so even if he did actually use a 1968 'chassis', he still wouldn't get a 'G' registration. Robert Nooooooooo, don't do that! Most of the 'from' addresses are spoof ones. I've had spam mails (supposedly) from English Academic Institutions, so I've emailed back (not using the address it came from) to the abuse department at that Academic Institution complaining about the spam mail and all they've done is emailed me back saying, very sorry, we've checked our systems and it didn't come from us. Some MGs used Jaeger (which I think was related to the Swiss watch company) instead of Smiths Instruments, for example GAN1 Midgets had them. Colin, God Mom left couple weeks ago to return home. Cheltenham, Victoria. The lady was ... "involved/quite taken" with her local club team. Seems they won (whatever the title or term for winning is??). This a condition common to many of the fair gender in your country. She was up early checking the results via online. Hi Colin, That is interesting, and I guess makes your car all the more unique! The last Austin Sprite was #87824, so 124 were built after yours at #87699. Certainly at that time as cars came to the end of the producton run they would use up whatever interchangeable parts were available, and I guess that included bodyshells! Interestingly, the first RWA Midget came out in August 1971. I believe they held back production until August each year as that was the change over date of the new registration plate letters in the UK, and when "new" models were... MORE
Linda Sometimes the actual 'build date' is more relevant and interesting than the registration date. eg, my MG Midget was first registered on 7th July 1971, however its build date was May - June 1970 ! Quite what it was doing for almost a year is a mystery, probably languishing in some Dealers stock. I live in Fairfield County, CT., ONE of the wealthier areas in these United States (though I am anything but wealthy, believe me!). New Jersey's oil huge oil facilities are within 50 miles of us. Additionally, we have our own oil facilities in New Haven and Bridgeport, each within an easy 50 miles of Fairfield County. Ron... It's the "forest" more than the trees I am talking about here...the general increases required by the whole system... I should have said "corporations involved in the medical business"...not corporations generally...my oversight, Ron. Gerard I think you're right, as it stands it really is beyond economic redemption. However, if it was a Frogeye, it would be worth the 50 quid, just for the registration and v5 and chassis number which you could then transplant onto a rebuilt shell and build one up that way. As I clean the multitude of bagged parts from my 62 Mk 2 Sprite I have found that most of the parts are identified. Not having done a total job of labelling, I came across two brackets which I am unable to identify. Can anyone help me by telling me where either of them belong?
