Don,
I currently own a 1500 and have done for about 8 years but only driven
1275's (in various states of tune) so I don't know how objective my
observations are but here goes...
For standard vs standard the 1500 certainly has more torque and IMO is
perhaps easier to drive around town in traffic althought at pretty subective
i guess. It also has syncro on 1st. However, although (well mine at
least) is silky smooth even at unadvisably high revs the 1275 always seems
to me more comfortable reving very high. not to say the 1500 won't but in
standard trim its getting pretty weezy by 4500! in all honesty.
bodywise almost the same, mines an early 1500 (Feb '75 and the interior is
identical in every respect to the last 1275's. Fron wings have huge apatures
in them that are larger than the ones on the front of the 1275 front wings
but of course you can't see them due to several hundredweight of rubber on
the front!
As far as 1500's being 'overstressed blow up lumps' id really consider that
to be 'man in the pub' talk, if maintained correctly etc theyre fine but an
oil cooler is a MUST! Even BL's litrature stated that one is desirable.
I'm pretty sure the spring rates both front and back were increased but I
guess 1275 owners, indeed yourself, could confirm this. As for general
handling, mines on 400lb 8 1/4" front springs, and lowered 1 1/4" at the
rear on blocks, with poly bushes all round and a 3/4" ARB with Nylatron
blocks, these mods REALLY made a difference to the car, and its really a
good drive despite the extra weight front and rear from the bumpers.
Hope that is of at least some use.....
Neil
