I very much agree with what you're saying!
I think Concours has become rediculous. Partly because judges cannot
possibly know the details of every car they're judging and partly because
almost every car now being entered into Concours events are now 10 times
better than they were when they left the factory, yet they hang onto this
judging criteria that the cars should be as they 'left the factory' !
I remember a poster on this list stating that he has a very low mileage
'original' car that has not been restored in anyway and is 'as it left the factory'
complete with stickers, yet does not win any Concours events. I think this
proves my above point.
The other problem with Concours events is that you're effectively competing
against other cars, with any situation such as this, owners will simply
continue to make their cars 'better' than the other cars to win, and none of
them bear any resemblance to the cars as they 'left the factory'.
Personally I much prefer to see a points system, whereas you start off with a
set number of points say 1,000 and you lose points for non-originality and
'condition' and as long as you meet the set number of points for what is
considered a Concours de elegance car, say 750, you are awarded that title.
There should be no outright winner, but merely a number of cars that have
met the Concours criteria.
