Yes...
Bill Perry does favor the new synthetic oils as they are simply superior
to the
mineral oil based products, which BTW
are pretty damn good themselves these
days. Synthetic also allows for MUCH easier shifting of the box in cold
weather,
especially subsequent to initial start after the car has been sitting in
freezing temps.

However, their "slipperiness" and flow characteristics virtually
guarantee that
in all cases, you will either "lose" more or
"burn" more in either event, the loss of
synchronizer action in the gearbox already
having been discussed.
I had a minor leak in the MiniMania oil
pressure regulator installed a few months
ago to keep pressure down to a reasonable 60psi at all times. It is
amazing how much oil I lost through this
tiny leak where the "screw" enters the
body of this device. Wrapping the screw
with a little teflon tape seems to have done the trick but this case
proves the
point....synthetic "creeps"....if there is
anyway "by" internal tolerances or seals
in general, synthetic will "find it's way"!! :)
And this is not all bad....a LITTLE oil in
the combustion process (valve guides) is
not necessarily a bad thing...as in
"upper cylinder lubricant".
