I pack the oil pump with black moly grease (Molybdenum Disulphide). The oil picks up straight away, the moly does no harm at all to the bearings etc, and it all gets dumped out 30 minutes later anyway.
Yes, I know you can prime the pump through the hole in the left rear corner, but my thumb get sore pushin down the plunger on that oil can.
Now here's another way of priming the pump. You know where the oil line goes into the rear of the block on the right hand side? Well directly below that inside the enigine, is the oil pump. I have an oil cooler fitting with 6" of clear plastic tubing that I screw into this hole. Fill the tube with oil, then roll the car backwards. The oil pump, turning backwards, sucks the oil out of the tube and into the pump. Then spin the engine on the starter motor. You might get a couple of bubbles coming up the tube, but then you get a steady pumping of oil starting to fill the tube. You now have oil pressure.
