Hi all-
First, let me take a moment and thank you all for the gracious way so
many of you have spent your time trying to help. I recently sold
a '96 Porsche 993, and let me tell you, if you do your own wrenching,
you are on your own. This group is a real pleasure.....
Worked on the problem this evening. Not sure what I have learned. I
first pulled the starter. No change in problem. Next I decided to
spend some quality time on my knees watching the valve and piston
movement. Very interesting. I watched each cylinder separately.
EVERY piston was able, at some point, to cycle up to TDC AND start
back down. Am I correct that this fact alone eliminates any issues
with the heads and/or valves?
Next I inserted a wooden dowel in the spark plug hole and checked the
action of each piston as it approached the bottom of its cycle. Once
again, each piston was able to cycle down and at least start back
up. What does this mean? Does this mean there are no issues with
the bottom end? Could it still be getting hung up somewhere on the
bottom end?
I checked the distributor input shaft and verified it was bolted
tightly. Did not pull it.
As some of you suggested, I next pulled the driveshaft. No change.
I next got the clutch going. WHAT AN AWFUL JOB!!!!!! Anyway it is
done. Through the starter hole I was able to observe that the clutch
was properly releasing the tranny from the engine. With the clutch
depressed, I turned the engine over by hand and the same problem
STILL occured. Am I correct that this eliminates the tranny from the
equation?
My daughter thinks the solution is a small block chevy. I told her I
was CERTAIN I was going to get the problem fixed. She's starting to
doubt me. Her brothers think the whole thing is rather humorous.
I'm secretely starting to get worried.
So where am I at? With what I've done, what parts of the car have I
eliminated from consideration? What should I do next?
First one with the solution gets added to the family trust fund.
