Ok, thanks everyone for your input, - all taken on board. - The general
consensus seems to be mixed, but slightly favouring the lever-arms if they
are rebuilt to a better-than-original spec. And nobody seems to have used
the Moss telescopic kit, just the Frontline one which is also worth knowing.
My initial concern had been based on two things:
1. From word of mouth from other car folk that had bought 'uprated' lever
arms in the 70's that then leaked after a year or so, and even recently
someone told me about a recently refurbished one leaking after about a year,
but I see now that there are very different standards of refurbishment
available and still at a reasonable price.
2. Lever arms where used by the manufacturers in the 50s onwards, but are no
longer in production on any modern car. If a design like that is abandoned
universally in favour of telescopics then I would guess that it's for a
reason. On the other hand I guess the levers are more in keeping with the
originality of the car, and so many people on this group seem to be happy
enough with them that I'd be very willing to overlook this fact to save a
few hundred quid on a car that is only going to be used the odd weekend in
the summer!
The only other thing that might still make me go for the telescopics is the
fact that their stiffness is adjustable, which gives you something else to
'play with' on the car, and the modern ones are alterable just by twidling a
knob without having to dismantle the car - a road side adjustment! But then
again, I'm not racing this thing, so as a road car I don't think I can
really justify the extra expense as I don't really need *that* much control
over the handling.
I will postpone my final decision until closer to the time when I need to
make it (the shell is just about to go away for a bit of bodywork and a
professional respray), but it's looking more and more like the lever-arms
are going to win, with Peter C likely being 'the man'. Thanks again

Now, about these 9" discs that are available... :-) Ok, that's a question
for another day further down the line!
