Welcome to the list Paul.
How long is it going to take? How long is a piece of string?
They (being they, I mean people who have been down this path
before) reckon that a ground up nut and bolt rebuild of any
classic car will take around about 2,000 manhours of work. I'll
save you the calculation of that into real terms - its about 5 years
of part time (by part time I mean every weekend and evening)
work. If you don't work on it every evening and weekend - add on
the time accordingly - this is why rebuilds can often take
anywhere between 5-10 years of work.
Do not under estimate the amount of work this is going to
involve, and how ever long you think a job will take you - multiply
it by about a factor of 10.
I don't mean to dampen your spirits, I just want you to
understand what you're getting yourself into.
So, when you start striping the car down, for goodness sake be
comprehensive in your cataloging and bagging up of the parts,
because I guarantee you 5 years down the line you won't have a
clue where half the bits go if you don't.
Buy every book you can get you hands on, on Midget and Sprite
restoration and read them all before you do a thing - all the main
ones have been mentioned by listers.
Regarding parts, go to www.moss-europe.com and ring/email
one of the UK offices - they'll send you a catalogue with all parts
illustrated and numbered - it's all you'll need to identify every
single part on the car.
Regarding paint, get a British Heritage Motor Industry Trust Trace
Certificate - that will tell you what the original paint colour was
and you can get the paint code out of any of the books that have
been mentioned.
