Well, Jens...lot of variables here including
outside air temp and the clearances to
which the engine was built.
Mineral oils are where it's at for break-
in, Jens. Synthetics (or partial synthetic)
should not be used as they reduce rather
than promote, fricition
"Breaking in" means friction between parts
and you'll get a lot LESS of this with
the more "slippery" synthetic and partial
synthetics. Mineral oils aren't as slippery
so friction would he higher, thus accelerating the break-in process.
Most likely, since you've switched to
mineral oil, the break-in process is
actually continuing and not really over,
miles on the engine notwithstanding.
Assuming (ass-u-me) this is true, you
WOULD expect to see higher temps with
the mineral oil (IF the above is the case).
The suddenly empty fuel bowls could very
well be due to an intermittent fuel pump,
(just because the pump is new, doesn't
mean it may not have a mfg. defect) or
local high heat in the engine compartment
causing a temporary "vapor lock" or
obstruction in the fuel line (junk in the
tank?).
Different ambient outside air temps can
also affect engine operating temperature as well of course, inclusive of
underbonnet temperatures as well, though
you don't mention different ambient temps
from day to day use in your post.
In a really tight engine, you won't notice
any difference in oil pressure between
the thinner synthetic and heavier mineral
oils, unless the viscosities are VERY
different. Bear in mind as well that oil pressures exceeding 60psi or so
(hot)
(talking street cars, not racing tolerances)
at 3,000 rpm or higher, actually
ADD to engine heat by causing
foaming which actually reduces the oil's
ability to do it's job.
