Have been following your discussion of mystery mods. This may help. It sounds like your 74 has twin carbs. In 75 they went to the single Zenith and the third rubber hose from the canister hooked up to a compression fitting on the back or firewall side of the carb near the bottom. It may be that the emissions equipment was retrofitted.
