Bob....
I say safety first when it comes to "serious" structure. According to
Spridget
books I've read, a great deal of structural
strength emanates from firewall and is tied into the floors to the rear
"bulkhead" which houses the forward rear
spring attach points. I could be
wrong on this and if I am, I apologize for
THIS is the basis of my opinion, which is
not very "hands on" learned to the extent
of guys like Frank, Chuck, and others far
more knowledgeable then I.
If the floors and sills were basically sound
and mostly there, I might be tempted to
"patch" (small patch!!) "your way".
But I interpreted Kevin's post as basically
meaning the floors (and sills) are all but
gone and thus, was tempted to write a responding post along the same
lines as
Nigel's original response (he beat me to
it....he IS quick!:).
Now I am not there to see the car, but
ass-u-me 'ing it's as bad as it sounds to
me....welding new steel panels sounds
like the way to go for max longevity of
the "repair" along with max. strength....
as in case of accident of the type I
was in not so very long ago, fr'instance....
where the Spridget impacted an energy-
absorbing divided highway barrier sideways at about 50mph....the body
"telescoped" sideways!
The body was "bent" in the aforementioned respect to the extent
the unibody stucture wasn't worth
repairing.
As Nigel says, this could be "complete"
body rebuild time as Kevin states the car
is a good runner as in mechanically sound
condition.
I was going to ask Kevin to ask himself
this question (before getting started):
"Do you, or are you, considering this car
as a 'keeper""? Do you like it this much
to invest the time, effort and/or money.
Or do you want to find another decent
tub/roller and transfer the mechanicals
and use the present car for parts?
