So I am motoring down a nice quiet highway at 50MPH and come to a
leisurely stop at a traffic light. 30 seconds go by, light turns
green and I motor on up to 50 MPH again. AFter about a mile, I detect
the distinct smell of burning brakes. Dang, I hope that's not me....
unfortunately it was. SO I pulled over to the side and came to a
stop. The brake pedal was hard and would not depress very far.
Furthermore, the brakes were not responding very well (nor grabbing).
After stopping I noticed the stinky smoke coming from *both* front
wheels - the rear's seemed fine.
After waiting about 45 minutes for the tow truck to arrive, I got
back in the car and the brake pedal seemed fine and the brakes seemed
to work. I had it towed anyway and there it sits in my garage.
Background:
New rotors and pads at the beginning of the summer, caliper kit in
both calipers, bright shiny red paint on both calipers (I hope it
isn't the paint that caused this), relatively new master cylinder
(about 4 years old), new rear calipers and shoes, completely flushed
brake system and replaced bake fluid with DOT5 silicon brake fluid
(don't ask why).
Any ideas what causes this sort of behaviour? I *think* this may have
happed once before when I smelled burning brakes but then it went
away and I thought that it was someone else.
Any comments/help is appreciated.
