I recall when I could not get the toe to stay put on my '74 Midget when
I first
acquired it. After replacing tie rod ends,
bearings, etc., I finally just broke down
and replaced the whole suspension with
new parts. And prior to this, it WAS "stiff"
and while it became less stiff with much
grease, it then became loose due to worn clearances, even as it became
less stiff as
we continued to grease it often.
So diplomacy aside, it can be just as you
say...BTDT.
Quite expensive but, with proper scheduled care the new front end lasted
over 100,000 miles and this, modified for
lower ride height, stiffer springs and KYB
Gas-Adjust tube shocks....and 60 series
008R's.
So as basic and crude the design may be
keeping it well greased and the rack
well lubricated as well IS the key to
longevity, even with a stiffer set-up than
stock. So here again, it is as you say
in this dept. as well. Take good care of it
and it will take good care of you, even
when substantially upgraded in terms
of a stiffer ride and larger tire footprint.
I have consumed 1/2 the Mickey D's
jumbo coffee....I'm ready for anything,
now!! :):)
