Thank you and I'm pleased to hear your new sill is going to stay on!
And yes I've already sprayed the underneath in topcoat, it's all done, as well
as the engine bay and inside. I'm just working on the outer panels now.
Repair panels are notorious for poor fit, some suppliers of repair panels are
better than others (yes Ashley Hinton, you're one of the good ones:) and
pretty much all of them require some form of fettling to make them fit
correctly. To be honest 2 or 3 mil really doesn't sound that much, are you sure
you can't just 'fettle' it to fit right? I don't think there was one single repair
panel I used on my car I didn't have to make some modifications to, to make it
fit correctly.
I must confess, I didn't replace the whole A post on my car, for several
reasons. First was because I didn't need too, and only needed to replace the
lower half, and second it's important to try and keep some reference to help
with fitting new panels. I tried to keep as much of the original car as I
possibly could, even if it meant the work would take longer, which I'm sure it
did.
On the drivers side (RHD Car) I replaced only the part below the triangular box
section with a complete repair section, on the passenger side, I felt braver
and actually made up the repair sections myself, using the old ones as
templates. This included the entire captive hinge plate mounting. You'd never
know though unless you looked at if from about 6 inches distance.
Eeg try and get hold of the 'Practical Classics' on Midget and Sprite
Restoration, they cover the replacement of the A post very well. Some come
up on ebay.co.uk now and again. In fact thinking about that, I think they had
similar problems getting their A post to fit correctly and ended up grinding off
some of the metal where the post fits into the right angle between sill and
inner door footwell panel, because it wasn't sitting correctly. Maybe you
could look at that area on your car?
