Welcome to the list, and well done on your bravery on buying a load of bits
that's meant to be a car!
You don't say if you're in the US or UK (apologies to other list members in
other countries) but the majority of list members are from one or other of
these two countries.
I mainly use Moss (www.moss-europe.com) for the simple reason they pretty
much have any part you may want under the same roof. I wouldn't say they
were the best (and other list members have their own favourites) but I've
found them to be pretty good in terms of service and delivery. The first thing
I'd do if I were you is to get one of their parts manuals for 'Sprite and Midget
1967 - 1979'. That will list every single part used in those model years.
Regarding books, these are the ones I'd recommend you get -
Haynes Service Manual (can be got on ebay pretty cheap)
Basically a workshop Manual
Guide to Purchase & DIY Restoration of the
MG Midget and Austin-Healey Sprite by Lindsay Porter - Haynes
ISBN 0-85429-336-1 (can also be got on ebay)
Bit dated now, but useful information on bodywork repairs, and some
mechanical restoration.
Practical Classics on Midget & Sprite Restoration
Published by Practical Classics Magazine ISBN 094820 7485
Similar to the Lindsay Porter book, but useful on bodywork restoration
(I've seen a few on ebay)
Restoring Sprites and Midgets by Grahame Bristow
Published by Brooklands Books ISBN 1 85520 598X
A more recent book than the other two (2002) It doesn't cover bodywork
restoration but covers pretty much everything else in a lot more detail that
the other two books. It was intended as a guide to 're-shelling' using a
Heritage Shell. This book will be invaluable once your shell and bodywork is
finished and painted.
(Rarely comes up on ebay)
Original Midget & Sprite by Terry Horler
Published by Bay View Books ISBN 1-870979-45-1
Doesn't cover any form of restoration, but is invaluable as a reference book,
charting production changes and historical information.
(Does come up on ebay but is horrifically expensive!)
Regarding general bodywork repairs, painting, rust proofing etc
I found the following book very helpful -
The Car Bodywork Manual by Lindsay Porter
Published by Haynes ISBN 0 85429 373 6
If you don't want to get them all right away, I'd start off with the workshop
manual, then one or other of the next two books. Once you've finished the
bodyshell restoration I'd buy the Grahame Bristow book, its invaluable.
