By Modern driving I am assuming that they are talking about fast
road and motorway driving 60-80 mph. I'm not sure exactly what rpm
she'd be doing at that speed but I would imagine that it would be
around the 4000+ mark. Given what has been said then in 90F summer
heat an oil cooler would be very beneficial for fast use.
However I wouldn't take the Midget onto the motorway for the same
reasons that I wouldn't take the Cooper onto the motorway
1. It is too small and vulnerable
2. It is too slow. Realistically, if your car can't do a steady 90
then it has no business being on the motorway. You simply become a
danger to yourself and other road users.
3. They handle too well, why would I choose to drive it in a
straight line?
4. These cars were never designed for that sort of use/abuse and it
is unfair to expect them to do it.
5. I would need a hearing aid by the time I was 30!
My Midget has been motoring for 25 years and 78000 miles without a
cooler and (as far as I am aware) all is well in the engine dept. If
there was a problem I think it would have reared it's head by now.
Who knows, I may be forced to eat my words in a couple of years but
even if the worst does come to the worst it is only a Triumph 1500
engine, we're not talking about a vintage Bentley here! I'm sure
that there are quite a few abandoned project
Spitfires/Midgets/Dolomites out there that I could glean another
from.
Thats the great thing about our cars, the bits are available both
new and secondhand virtually anywhere!
